The University of Florida College of Dentistry, Department of Oral Biology is seeking applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor rank with a primary focus on scholarly activity with opportunities for DMD and advanced education teaching and/or faculty practice.

The University of Florida College of Dentistry (UFCD) is one of the leading dental schools in the United States devoted to improving and promoting oral health throughout Florida, the nation and worldwide through excellence in teaching, research, patient care and service. UFCD has over 150 faculty, 9 departments, 12 degree and certification programs, 372 DMD students, 150 advanced education residents, fellows & interns, and is 5th out of 65 US dental schools in NIH funding.

The Department of Oral Biology is a tremendously diverse scientific area encompassing the disciplines of molecular biology, protein biology, genetics, microbiology, immunology, genomics, biochemistry, biophysics, craniofacial development, pharmacology, physiology, and cancer biology. Because of the unique combination of tissues and functions of the mouth and craniofacial complex, the field of oral biology blends fundamental scientific disciplines in unique and fascinating ways to meet the challenges of developing new and highly effective ways to manage, cure or prevent diseases and developmental defects. The Department of Oral Biology at the University of Florida College of Dentistry is home to 13+ faculty and a large cadre of students, post-doctoral trainees, technical and administrative staff. The department generates about $10 million dollars in extramural research funding annually and is also the home to the NIH/NIDCR Comprehensive Training Program in Oral Biology, which provides support for Ph.D. students, D.M.D./Ph.D. dual-degree students, and postdoctoral fellows. The department offers a highly dynamic and supportive research and training environment for undergraduates, graduate students and clinical fellows. We are continuing to recruit additional scientists to broaden our commitments to cutting edge research and training in the molecular basis of diseases that affect people around the world.

Job Duties: The Faculty will be responsible for development, implementation, and/or growth of a cutting edge, independent yet collaborative research program focused in oral biology including but not limited tomicrobial-host interactions, immune dysfunction, cell and molecular biology. As such, the faculty will interact with the UFCD Office of Research to support the College’s research programs and initiatives. The faculty will also be expected to mentor students, residents, faculty and staff within the College and University. As such, the faculty member will also engage with the Office of Academic Affairs to develop, implement and/or deliver biomedical science content within the faculty’s realm of expertise to DDS, MS, and PhD students. In addition, the position will collaborate with other Colleges and Departments within the University of Florida, as well as local/regional/national/international research and education programs.

Specific duties include:

  • Develop, direct and lead teams in a cutting edge independent yet collaborative research program.
  • Seek and acquire extramural funding to support an independent yet collaborative research program.
  • Integrate and supervise DDS, MD, MS and PhD students in research when applicable.
  • Serve on committees and boards within and outside UFCD.
  • Serve on local, national and international committees for state/federal government agencies and professional societies. Represent the College to internal and external constituencies as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties and assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chair of Oral Biology.

Expected Salary:

  • Salary and rank are commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Education/Experience

  • PhD in Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Oral Biology, or otherwise appropriate area of expertise.
  • Evidence of potential for productivity in scholarly activities (e.g. success in acquiring extramural funding, peer-reviewed publications of research and/or other scholarly activities).

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Individuals with a dual degree (e.g. DDS, DMD) are encouraged to apply.
  • Extramural funding for research/scholarly activities.
  • Experience teaching in dental education.
