The University of Maryland, Baltimore, School of Dentistry invites applicants to apply for a full-time Open Rank Assistant Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, non-tenure track faculty position.

The Open Rank Assistant Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion collaborates with the Dean, Chief of Staff, administration, faculty, and the broader University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) community to develop and advance an equity, diversity, and inclusion strategy. Reporting to the Dean, the Assistant Dean works closely with the school’s leadership to achieve diversity and inclusion goals and initiatives, which is critical in embedding these values as core institutional principles.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leading strategic initiatives, fostering inclusive environments, and demonstrating a visionary approach to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within an academic or healthcare setting. They will be passionate about driving systemic change and committed to fostering a culture where diversity is celebrated, and inclusion is the norm.

The incumbent will be responsible for setting the school’s EDI strategy and implementing and measuring progress toward goals outlined in conjunction with the University’s first EDI strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy & Communication

In conjunction with the University EDI strategic plan, the incumbent will be responsible for setting goals and assessing progress in the following (REPS) areas: Recruitment and Retention, Experience and Culture, Professional Development and Career Advancement, Scholarship, Service, and Education.

Communicate progress towards the School’s EDI goals through various platforms, including annual reports, MDental publications, the UMSOD website, and other channels, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Engage with students, faculty, and staff to gather feedback and insights on EDI initiatives and use this data to improve and adapt strategies continuously.

Advise on institutional responses to diversity issues, including acting as a spokesperson and strategic leader for these issues internally and externally.

Building relationships with School of Dentistry alumni and assisting the Office of Development and Alumni Relations with outreach efforts.

Attend related conferences and other internal and external programs to acquire and report on practices and information to improve the School of Dentistry’s diversity initiatives.

Speak about diversity and the School of Dentistry’s programs at conferences and other forums.

Collaboration and University Partnerships

Serve as the School of Dentistry’s representative in relevant community activities, groups, and professional organizations, and be responsible for elevating awareness of diversity and inclusion issues and initiatives both within and outside the School of Dentistry.

As a key member of the Dean’s leadership team, represent the Dean at important functions, events, and meetings, advocating for EDI values and initiatives.

Partner with departments across the School of Dentistry to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion content into graduate, postdoctoral, residency, and fellowship training programs curricula.

Attend regular meetings with the Vice President/Chief EDI Officer and EDI representatives from across campus. Participate in the ongoing EDI strategic planning process.

Support employee-initiated projects and provide advocacy for groups that support initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion to promote an inclusive work environment.

Programming:

Oversee the identification of relevant speakers, guests, and experts for School of Dentistry events and provide oversight regarding the planning and coordinating diversity and inclusion programs and training.

Participate in planning events such as the Faculty and Staff Retreat, the State of the School, and new student orientation.

Oversee assessment efforts to track participation and progress with strategic initiatives and goals.

Teaching and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion will teach in a role consistent with his/her area of expertise.

Responsible for supervising one full-time staff member, with the possibility of managing/mentoring student workers.

Qualifications – Internal

The following candidate qualifications and characteristics are desirable:

Experience in academic dentistry or medicine and/or a related healthcare field/health system.

Demonstrated track record in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies that promote success for students and employees in a higher education setting.

Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong communication skills and the ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and discretion.

An experienced agent for change with experience in organizational development.

Administrative experience leading programs to new levels of excellence, impact, and innovation

Experience supervising staff and providing professional development opportunities.

The successful candidate should hold a terminal professional degree (e.g., MD, DO, DDS/DMD) and/or PhD and have experience in academic dentistry/medicine or national organizations representing academic dentistry/medicine.

Qualified applicants must be eligible for an academic appointment in the School of Dentistry and have a record of teaching, service, and scholarship consistent with the appointment.

Hiring range: $110,000 – $170,000 per year (depending on rank and commensurate with education and experience).
