Organizational Unit Overview:
The School of Dental Medicine has ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry, and Foundational Sciences.
The mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide educational experiences for the dental students and residents and dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, and Community Service-Learning Centers throughout North Carolina. To operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.
Job Duties:
The Office of Clinical Affairs of the School of Dental Medicine at East Carolina University is responsible for all aspects of the school’s clinical activities. This office works in close collaboration with the School’s Offices of Extramural Clinical Practices; Student Affairs; Academic Success; Research; Dental Education and Informatics; Educational Support and Faculty Development; and Business Operations and Financial Affairs and the Departments of General Dentistry; Surgical Sciences; Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics; and Foundational Sciences to support the school’s programs and initiatives. In addition, the Office of Clinical Affairs works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and local/regional health care facilities to provide information and services related to clinical affairs.
The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs (ADCA) provides strategic leadership, oversight, and management for the school in the areas related to the school’s clinical pre-doctoral, clinical residency, faculty practice, and clinical research programs. The ADCA provides administrative support for clinical activities in anticipation of and response to the ongoing and evolving needs of modern dental students, residents, staff, faculty, and patients. The ADCA maintains a strong supportive relationship with other administrators, faculty, staff, residents, and students to provide a mission focus and to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and the state and federal education, healthcare, and safety regulations related to the school’s clinical facilities and clinical operations.
The ADCA oversees the activities of the Clinic Administrator and the Clinic Manager, who are responsible for the day-to-day management of the Ross Hall clinics. In addition, the ADCA works closely with the Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices (ADECP), the Director of the General Practice Residency (GPR) program, the Director of the Pediatric Dentistry residency program, and the Director of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program, and the Directors of Service Learning Center (SLC)-Ross Hall to ensure that the Community Service Learning Centers (CSLCs) and other internal and external clinical sites managed by the ECU School of Dental Medicine comply with all rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Specific duties include:
• Provide leadership in all matters related to the SoDM’s clinical enterprise and serve as chair of the Clinical Affairs Committee.
• Lead the School’s quality assurance and improvement efforts, appropriately responding to patient complaints and serving as Chair of the Quality Assurance/ Quality Improvement Committee.
• Serve as a member of the senior leadership team of the SoDM and as a member of DEC.
• Ensure open communications with the Senior Director of Informatics so that hardware and software updates necessary for maintaining a contemporary electronic patient record are adhered to and that all security protocols are current.
• Develop, implement, maintain, and update the operations, policies, and procedures related to clinical matters, delineating them in the ECU School of Dental Medicine’s Clinic Handbook, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and University requirements.• Lead the clinical affairs staff, providing direct support for the Clinic Administrator, Clinic Manager, Clinical Information Manager, Quality Assurance Director, and administrative support staff.
• Oversee the physical clinical facilities, clinical equipment, and clinical supply management in Ross Hall and work with the ADECP to ensure that all clinical operations and facilities are fully compliant with applicable federal, state, and University requirements.• Develop a strong working relationship with the Office of Institutional Integrity and the SoDM Office of Compliance.
• Provide leadership in managing the Office of Clinical Affairs budget and the SoDM’s Instrument Lease Program.
• Lead collaborative relationships with department chairs related to faculty calibration, credentialing, and privileging, and with deans and chairs in the development, refinement, and implementation of the clinical aspects of the curriculum, and in optimizing the use of technology to support clinical operations and learning.• Actively participate in the SoDM curricula through clinical teaching and other activities.
• Manage SoDM clinical affiliation agreements with other clinical programs undertaking activities in Ross Hall.
• Represent the SoDM with University and external constituencies related to licensure of faculty, residents, and students, and serve as a liaison with the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners and testing agencies, including CITA, ADEX, and others.• Respond to local and national requests for information and documentation related to the SoDM’s clinical programs.
• Perform other duties and assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.
• As Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, this position qualifies as a Senior Academic and Administrative Officer. The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs has substantial independence, administrative authority, and discretion in all areas of responsibility. This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine at East Carolina University.
The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs must qualify for a fixed-term position as a Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor, or a tenured or tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor.

Minimum Education/Experience:
• DDS or DMD degree from a CODA-accredited dental school (or Equivalent)
• Eligible for dental licensure in North Carolina
• Comprehensive clinical skills
• Broad knowledge of issues in dental education
• Minimum of seven years leadership experience in dental education at the institutional level, working in development, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring of a clinical education program leading to a dental degree; or a minimum of seven years leadership experience in a large dental/medical clinical operations or extensive dental practice
• Demonstrated experience in directing large dental clinical operations, dental school clinical affairs, or service as a clinical department chair
• Demonstrated commitment to generalist and community-based models of dental education
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina (a NC dental license must be secured before the first day of employment)
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
• Advanced degree in management or business administration
• Demonstrated experience in supervising the work of others in a dental education setting
• Demonstrated experience working directly with senior dental school administration, university administration, governing boards for higher education, and accrediting agencies
• Demonstrated experience and leadership responsibilities with professional organizations dedicated to education and dental education
• Successful experience with the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), as well as with the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) or Joint Commission (JCAHO) Accreditation
